Job Description

The Forester will provide support for a wide range of forestry-related activities and will directly contribute to the achievement of the goals set forth in the Clean Water/Healthy Habitat Initiative, the Strategic Climate Action Plan, the Forest Plan, and the Parks Open Space Plan, among other things.

Qualifications:

  • Site plan review professionals (including those from stormwater management, zoning, and transportation) consult with one another in order to ensure that the code requirements of other disciplines are met without interfering with the tree and landscape code.
  • Help build forest stewardship plans to guide future restoration and management of county-owned forestland. Field data collection and analysis are used to assess the health of the forest. Apply the Forest Landscape Assessment Tool (FLAT) to all previously acquired and newly acquired forestland parcels in order to evaluate their current status.
  • The silviculture plan execution must be in accordance with the regional silviculture strategy and the annual plan. Other responsibilities include field-verification of silviculture treatment candidates and provision of setting-specific recon information to management, silviculture contract negotiation, silviculture operation supervision, timely status updates for system activity updates, monitoring of contract performance including safety, SFI, EMP, production costs, and product quality, and processing of silvicultures.
  • Observes and participates in inspections of submitted landscaping, tree removal, and site clearing plans to ensure that they are in compliance with applicable municipal codes and ordinances; coordinates with lower level inspectors regarding site inspections to ensure that the information contained in submitted plans is accurate and up to date; reviews factors and grants or denies applications; provides applicants with written reasons for denial; assigns and participates in inspections of site clearing activities to ensure that work is completed properly.
  • Work includes confirming, setting up, inventorying, designing roads and obtaining rights-of-way.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the quality, amount, and kind of plant materials utilized are appropriate and that suitable processes are followed to protect existing and install new plants..
  • Conducting early- and mid-rotation responsibilities for the forestry department as well as any additional activities that may be allocated.
  • It’s important to keep forestry-related websites up-to-date and make new outreach materials that support different forestry programs.
  • Those working in this field are responsible for all areas of forest management and harvest monitoring on corporation or privately owned property.
  • As part of the Streets Division, this person takes care of the trees in the city and teaches other Streets Division workers how to do the job right.

Skills:

  • must have at least six months of experience in the field of landscape design, as well as six months of experience in the field of tree and landscape inspections from an accredited college or university, as well as six months of experience in the field of landscape design, as well as six months of experience in the field of tree and landscape inspections from an accredited college or university.
  • Perform inspections and identify pathological plant diseases; educate staff in tree and landscaping inspections; build and manage effective tree and landscaping inspection programs; conduct inspections and make diagnoses of diseased plant conditions. Determine whether sick or damaged trees can be repaired. Determine whether or not to approve or reject a landscaping idea after careful consideration. Be tenacious yet fair while enforcing laws, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Thorough understanding of tree planting techniques, policies, and practices (wrapping, guying, watering, mulching, and weeding), pruning, trimming, disease inspection, and disease eradication needs and alternatives.
  • Skills in Microsoft Office applications, such as Microsoft Excel and the ability to communicate in both written and spoken form, are needed.
  • Relationships with other workers, departments, and the general public must be maintained effectively.
