As a Forester at the Department of Natural Resources, you will be responsible for specialized technical work within the Division of Forestry (DNR). Your overall goal will be to guarantee that forest areas are properly developed, maintained, and used.

Qualifications:

  • It’s important to keep forestry-related websites up-to-date and make new outreach materials that support different forestry programs.

  • The major duties of this job include ensuring the health and safety of the City’s tree stock as well as training other members of the Streets Division on appropriate tree care procedures.
  • Consults with other site plan review staff (stormwater, zoning, and transportation) to ensure that the code requirements of other disciplines are adhered to without clashing with the tree and landscape code requirements.
  • Those working in this field are responsible for all areas of forest management and harvest monitoring on corporation or privately owned property.
  • In charge of making sure that the region’s silviculture strategy is followed and that the annual plan is followed, field-verifying treatment candidates and providing information about the setting to management, negotiating contracts for silviculture, and supervising silviculture operations. Also, keeping track of the contract’s progress on safety, SFI, EMP, production costs and quality.
  • Monitor forestland held by your local government and assist in the creation of forest management plans that will help you manage the land in the future We collect and analyze data collected in the field as part of our work. Using this information, we can better understand the structure of the forest, which helps us better understand it. FLAT should be used in conjunction with forest service personnel and contractors.   • Landscape, tree removal, and site clearing plans are reviewed for compliance with municipal codes and ordinances; lower level inspectors are consulted regarding site inspections to verify the accuracy of information contained in submitted plans; applicants are notified in writing of the reasons for denial; assigns and participates in inspections of site clearing activities to ensure that work is performed in accordance with the plans;
  • Ensures that new construction, changes, and repairs conform with building rules, laws, zoning restrictions, and contract requirements for residential and light commercial buildings.

Skills:

  • Expertise in all aspects of tree care from planting to trimming to disease inspection to disease eradication is required.
  • Workers, departments and members of the general public must all be able to work together effectively.
  • Excel and Word skills in Microsoft Office, as well as good verbal and written communication skills, must be learned.
  • An undergraduate degree in urban forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or a related field, with six (6) months experience in tree and landscape inspections.
  • Perform inspections and identify pathological plant problems; educate employees in tree and landscaping inspections; build and manage effective tree and landscaping inspection systems; conduct inspections and give diagnosis. Analyze the viability of repairing sick or otherwise damaged trees. Review landscaping designs and make an informed decision on whether they should be accepted or rejected. Enforce laws, ordinances, and rules in a fair and consistent manner..
