Under direct supervision, the Phlebotomist collects, processes, and records patient specimens. Assists with sample analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control. Follows quality and safety regulations. Helps with patient flow.

Qualifications:

• Fill out the necessary laboratory forms with the documentation of the tests that were done and the notation of the diagnoses that correspond to the tests that were performed, Finish the lab requisition forms, then print off the relevant labels for the forms and the specimen container (s).
• Evaluate each request for a laboratory test to determine the appropriate quantity and kind of containers required for delivery to suitable laboratory sections and reference laboratories.
• Standard venipuncture and capillary techniques should be used to get samples of blood (from both adults and children), urine, or other bodily fluids as directed by the doctor.
• Blood draw. Independently operate laboratory equipment, including troubleshooting and arranging field repair visits as needed.
• Become familiar with all of the local computer system’s menu routes, including the ability to teach technical employees on complex computer operations.
• Help make sure that infection control procedures are followed by keeping the environment clean and sterile. This means cleaning the lab every day and emptying biohazard bags.
• Handling client-related queries and issues in a polite and timely way while adhering to department standards and procedures, including sophisticated texting scheduling.
• Perform quality control for testing and record it. Report abnormal results to a medical technologist or lab manager.
• Perform specimen handling, control, and tracking duties, which may entail the handling of potentially infectious/carcinogenic substances. Inventory, track, and order supplies as required.
• Maintaining specimen integrity while processing, packaging, and transporting specimens to the proper laboratory according to established laboratory protocols.

Skills:

• People usually learn how to do phlebotomy and skin punctures after at least six (6) months of experience, but ASCP Certification is preferred. A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the insurance company.
• Lab solutions and materials and media must be understood to perform one’s obligations in the field of chemistry. Data input requires familiarity with Microsoft Excel and electronic medical records (EMRs).
• or an Associate’s degree in natural science or allied health, or enrollment in a Medical Laboratory Science program; prior laboratory experience is preferred. A working knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to type quickly are required.
• Being able to successfully perform a venipuncture. Ability to collaborate with patients and other healthcare professionals The ability to prioritize tasks and successfully manage one’s time.
• Capability of lifting and carrying a minimum of 30 pounds, sitting for lengthy periods of time, and walking between office buildings are all required. Capability to deal with patients, significant others, and family members hailing from a variety of communities.
