Supports the laboratory’s technical activities via the work of a Phlebotomist. Phlebotomists collect samples, conduct waived point-of-care testing, assist in the laboratory, and handle associated administrative duties. Outpatients must be received in a friendly and efficient way, and orders must be entered thoroughly and precisely. Other responsibilities will be carried out as they are given.

Qualifications:

• Each laboratory test request should be evaluated to establish the number and kind of containers required for delivery to lab sections and reference laboratories.
• In order to preserve the integrity of the specimens while they are being processed, packaged, and transported to the right laboratory, established laboratory procedures must be followed.
• Carry out the necessary quality control and record it in the relevant log for each test that is done. You should notify the laboratory manager or medical technologist if the test results fall outside of acceptable parameters.
• Help infection control protocols comply by keeping the lab clean and emptying biohazard bags routinely.
• Taking care of client-related inquiries and concerns in a way that is both kind and efficient, while adhering to the rules and processes of the department, including the scheduling of complicated texts.
• Fill out the necessary laboratory forms with documentation of the tests that were done and notations of the diagnoses that correspond to the tests that were performed, Finish the lab request forms and make the necessary labels for the forms and the specimen container (s).
• Handle potentially infectious/carcinogenic materials as part of your duties as a specimen handler, controller and tracker Keep track of what you have and order what you need.
• Understand all local computer system menu paths as they relate to given work function, including teaching technical employees on sophisticated computer tasks.
• Patient blood drawn. Follow laboratory and pathology staff instructions to operate laboratory equipment autonomously, including sophisticated troubleshooting and arranging field repair visits.
• Collect blood specimens using recognized venipuncture and capillary procedures (both for adults and children), as well as other samples such as urine and other fluids as requested by the doctor.

Skills:

• Lab solutions, materials and media are required to carry out a job. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) is required for data input.
• The ability to carry out a successful venipuncture. Ability to work together with patients and other members of the healthcare team Ability to set priorities and manage one’s time effectively.
• Knowledge and expertise conducting phlebotomy and skin punctures as ordinarily obtained during a minimum of six (6) months of practice; ASCP Certification Preferred. Possession of a valid driver’s license and the capacity to comply with insurance company criteria.
• Able to lift and carry 30 pounds, sit for long periods, and stroll between buildings. Ability to work with varied patients, partners, and family members.
• Diploma or GED Associate degree in Natural Science/Allied Health or enrolled in Medical Laboratory Science program; lab experience desirable. Medical terminology and keyboarding needed.
