Job Description

An important part of the Patient Care Associate’s job is coordinating and overseeing the team’s efforts to offer nursing care to the patient and his or her family. In accordance with the professional practice model, the Patient Care Associate assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, delegates and evaluates patient nursing care.

Qualifications:

• Support a safe and compliant work environment by appropriately disposing of needles, urine specimens, and collecting cups.
• Performs basic patient care under an RN’s instruction. Reports patient medical and/or emotional changes to the RN. Assists nurses in emergency patient care.
• Carry out the nurse assessment on each patient by questioning the patient about their visit, assessing the patient’s weight and vital signs, and/or doing any other clinical procedures that may be deemed necessary.
• Perform clinical duties as requested by the physician, such as taking blood, running the centrifuge, and collecting urine for drug screenings, pregnancy testing, and alcohol tests.
• Depending on what the needs of the department are, the individual is responsible for a variety of general clerical tasks. These responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, responding to calls made through the telephone and call lights, as well as greeting patients, visitors, and anyone that come to the facility.
• Clerical tasks include but are not limited to answering phones and call lights, welcoming patients and visitors.
• Shows concern for patient comfort, privacy, and development. Answers patients’ and families’ queries and explains procedures and processes. Confidential.
• Attending seminars, training programs, in-service meetings, and reading modern literature contribute to personal growth. Sharing responsibility for maintaining competencies (both the individual and the institution).
• Facilitate patient access to suitable prescriptions by engaging with insurance companies and securing preauthorization for medications. When preauthorization is rejected, file appeals to insurance companies to overturn rejections.
• Making phone calls, answering the phone, setting up patient appointments, procuring medical supplies, and scribing all contribute to a smooth office operation.

Skills:

• Basic life support OR cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and the ability to communicate well in both verbal and written English
• A certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and administration of electrocardiographs, as well as a facility-based training program successfully completed.
• Prior experience working in an outpatient primary care, drug addiction, or mental health environment as a registered nurse. Current certification in CPR or BLS required.
• Have a high school diploma or a GED, and have finished a CNA program or are presently enrolled and have completed the first semester of an LPN or RN nursing program.
• The successful completion of a Department of Health-required Phlebotomy training program that is acceptable to the Lab Director and adequate for the facility’s workload.
