Job Description

The veterinarian will be in charge of the collection’s health, as well as quarantine and medical operations. The veterinarian will also help with the purchase and disposition of animals in the collection, as well as animal transportation and hand rearing techniques as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Maintains client/patient medical/surgical records and ensures that all required logs are kept up-to-date in accordance with approved protocols.
  • In order to create relationships with clients, gathers detailed information about them and listens to and understands their concerns and requirements.
  • Ability to gather animal data from employees, enter dispositions into a computer, and produce monthly and weekly reports in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ability to obtain and control euthanasia drugs and equipment, as well as ensuring that supplies and equipment are used in accordance with all applicable state and federal rules and laws. Ability to stay abreast of current trends and developments in the animal sheltering business.
  • Provides animal husbandry, ethical animal handling, sanitation and disease prevention, basic animal behavior, medical care, surgical assistance (intake and discharge), and animal first aid training to employees; Assists in the proper training, evaluation, and execution of animal euthanasia via injection. Examines all seized animals and orders euthanasia for those who are sick or damaged.
  • Performs high-quality sterilization surgery for the control of adopted animal populations in a fast-paced shelter environment. Routine veterinarian care includes triage, physical exams, emergency medical care, stabilization, diagnosis, and treatment of sick and injured animals, minor surgery, vaccines, and testing.
  • Vaccinates all animals that have not been vaccinated against rabies before releasing them when vaccination is safe, and certifies that all animals released from quarantine are rabies-free. Provides advice to animal bite victims, including how to safeguard their personal safety.
  • Preventative care is promoted through advocating and delivering routine vaccines, as well as educating clients on healthy pet diet and lifestyle choices.
  • Creates and adheres to specified medical treatment protocols. Ability to decipher local animal control ordinances, legislation, rules, and regulations, as well as city policies. Capacity to react to public inquiries from members of the public and city officials; Assist in the prompt and successful settlement of issues.
  • Physical exams, diagnostic treatments, surgical, and dental procedures are all completed successfully. Clients learn about their pets’ diagnoses, treatment programs, preventative health care, and dietary requirements.

Skills:

  • Must be able to work as part of a team while still being able to do projects on their own.
  • It is necessary to have exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication abilities.
  • To work with ultra-potent narcotics, you must have a federal DEA license and be registered with the DEA.
  • A doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM), a veterinary medical doctor (VMD), or an equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary institution is required.
  • It is necessary to be familiar with the ZIMS medical record-keeping system.
