Job Description

When hired as a Managing Editor, you’ll be tasked with seeing through all phases of a project for a certain product line, from contract signing through final product delivery. Budgets, timelines, and financial output must all be managed, as must the communication of any changes to stakeholders and the author/editor at a high level throughout the project’s duration (s).

  • Work together with the retail crew, local museums, and print-on-demand vendors to fulfill retail and wholesale orders.
  • Keeping in close communication with the author throughout the content creation process, informing them of impending workflow stages, and laying out clear guidelines for the author’s role in the content’s development and production, and finally, receiving the finished output.
  • Create money-making possibilities, such as selling Magazine in retail settings like bookshops and newsstands, and driving the development of a successful advertising campaign that spans all of the content platforms.
  • Establishing a timeline and working with Editorial to make sure the right data is in the system from the contracting stage through the product life cycle
  • manage ongoing updates to the workplace style guide, focusing on more inclusive and equitable wording.
  • Working with Editorial/Senior Managing Editor to establish future year pub plans, using knowledge of the publishing program, author base.
  • Tracking project progress through the stages of the end-to-end content process; ensuring each component’s schedule is up to current; and advising stakeholders of any deviation from FY expectations.
  • Collaborate with freelancers and in-house producers, authors, copy editors, and designers.
  • Using the right tools to keep tabs on project costs and compare them to projected amounts; alerting stakeholders to variances and working to resolve them
  • Support other departments in producing high-quality written content, including exhibition labels, program fliers, and membership materials.


  • manages the process of acquiring fees and licenses for the publication of images, artwork, and other copyrighted materials in journals, as well as compiling relevant data for publication.
  • expertise in digital book publishing processes and other forms of media production.
  • Is aware of how decisions and actions affect the company’s bottom line, cash flow, and return on investment (ROI).
  • Grasps the big picture of content creation from start to finish, including research, planning, creation, and distribution.
  • The ability to use email and the Microsoft Office suite.
