Job Description

The proofreader is in charge of examining the content of all documents before they are delivered to a client, submitted, or deployed technically. He or she is an expert in the English language, knowledgeable with the AMA editorial style, and capable of guaranteeing the accuracy of grammar and spelling in all written materials. Line editing, clean reading, and ensuring that the text is consistent with approved materials, a set of revisions, or an earlier submission are among tasks that a proofreader may be requested to complete. To make sure that the tech builds correspond with the finished creative, he or she might also be required to provide a side-by-side comparison. The proofreader will need to have previous expertise editing both digital (interactive) and print materials and electronically marking up papers. The proofreader must be extremely meticulous, have an acute eye for errors, be adaptable, be able to handle shifting priorities, and work autonomously. He or she is encouraged to raise any queries they may have regarding a project to the editor, copywriter, or designer. The proofreader is in charge of actively prioritizing their daily workload and informing the project managers of any known schedule restrictions.

  • Correct misspellings, grammatical errors, and awkward word choice in the original paper or electronic copy by completing appropriate research. Help the department head come up with some rules for writing and some suggestions on how to present information if that’s needed.
  • Competence with Windows and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required; familiarity with the web is a bonus.
  • Send in your corrected papers and check your corrections against the original.
  • Document everything that has been edited and keep track of the changes.
  • Communicate with coworkers, attorneys, and superiors to gain insight into tasks, voice concerns, and request changes to paperwork.
  • Be sure that documents are free of spelling and grammar errors by giving them a final read-through. In order to find typos in a paper, a proofreading code should be used.
  • Use technology to efficiently execute proofreading and copyediting tasks, such as ChangePro for electronic review, IM, track changes for comments, and electronic work logs.
  • Proofreading experience of at least five years; experience working in a legal setting is preferred.
  • Read original copy or drafts, to detect and mark for correction any grammatical, typographical or compositional errors.
  • Excellent verbal, written, organizational and interpersonal skills with a sharp attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.


  • Capacity to take the initiative oneself and see the big picture while keeping an eye on the minutiae is a must.
  • Proven success in communicating and working with all levels of an organization’s staff, from upper management to frontline employees.
  • Must be team-oriented and collaborative. Share information, goals, opportunities, successes and failures with the appropriate parties.
  • Must show that they can keep the company’s business and employee information private.
  • Flexibility and the capacity to work under pressure are required in order to react swiftly and favorably to changing demands and opportunities.
