  • Determine the degree of risk throughout the loan application process, and underwrite the loan successfully using lending regulations and procedures to reduce the risk.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of loan product requirements and industry rules, including aiding with mortgage fraud prevention, discovery, and resolution.
  • Responsible for remaining current on all secondary market requirements, with a specific focus on the credit union’s investors, such as FNMA, FHLMC, and FHLB. Changes to these principles must be communicated properly and promptly.
  • Provide outstanding internal and external customer service that is tailored to each client’s individual needs and encourages bank loyalty.
  • Examines and analyses information on mortgage loan papers to determine if the buyer, the property, and the loan conditions are in compliance with Credit Union and regulatory standards.
  • Manages a mortgage loan application queue. Completes a full risk analysis of mortgage loan applications, which includes legal document evaluation, income analysis (including self-employment and tax return analysis), and asset analysis. Determine if the application matches the credit union portfolio or secondary market requirements and offer approval/denial depending on the results. Alternative approval criteria are suggested if necessary.
  • While administrating and maintaining the Bank’s appraisal portal, communicate with appraisers on errors, updates, and extra information.
  • Responsible for staying up to date on all state, local, and federal regulations, as well as ensuring that all guidelines are followed, including but not limited to the Ability to Repay (ATR), Qualified Mortgage (QM), Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), Truth in Lending (TILA), and all other applicable mortgage lending rules.
  • To correctly assess individual risk, analyze credit, income, and assets on a loan-by-loan basis and provide underwriting recommendations to Mortgage Originators as quickly as feasible.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make sound decisions about applicants’ creditworthiness based on current underwriting standards, Bank policies, processes, skills, and experience.


  • CUDL 360 and Symitar, as well as Microsoft Excel and Word Processing, are all necessary skills.
  • The candidate must be well-versed in conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, VHDA, and NC underwriting guidelines.
  • Communication skills are essential.
  • Analytical and decision-making abilities are as crucial as the ability to communicate. Communication and problem solving skills are excellent both orally and in writing.
  • It is desirable that you have a minimum of 1-3 years of mortgage underwriting experience, or a similar combination of education and experience.
