Job Description

An emergency response firefighter responds to calls within their authority for fire suppression, hazardous materials response/rescue operations, crowd and traffic management at disaster scenes, and medical support at the First Responder level if needed. The students in this class follow a set of processes, but they are free to make their own decisions about what and when to do.

Qualifications:

  • First responder in the event of fires; initiates firefighting operations; assists in the suppression of blazes by rescuing trapped persons, searching for and rescuing trapped individuals, and executing ventilation/salvage operations.
  • firefighters react to emergencies in a safe and timely manner, keeping fire and life safety equipment operational.
  • Upon arrival at a site, a Firefighter must be able to compile a variety of reports, including occupancy plans, inspection reports, alarm incident reports, and a general assessment of the situation.
  • Besides installing smoke detectors, firefighters help the fire department build relationships with people in the community. They also teach people of all ages about the importance of fire and life safety.
  • Respond to incidents involving the release of hazardous materials or the threat of explosives. Avoid polluting the surface drainage system by constructing dikes or containing hazardous substances.
  • Every day, you ensure sure the allocated vehicle is in excellent operating condition. You monitor fluid levels using a gauge or manually, and you also manage the pumps and ensure that everything on the vehicle is operating as it should be. Clean and refill the car, if necessary.
  • Hand tools, power tools, and smoke ejectors are just some of the things firefighters and rescuers may make use of. Other tools, such as axes and pike poles, will be used to gain entry into houses.

  • This position requires the ability to complete 240 hours of training each year in addition to their normal shift obligations, as well as the ability to respond to emergency calls when not on duty and to be trained in CPR and first aid.
  • Employee must keep all applicable licenses current and valid at all times as a condition of ongoing employment, and must carry the license at all times while on duty.
  • The NFPA 1582 required physical examination must be passed. The ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force on a regular or frequent basis is required to lift, carry, push, pull, or move any object.
