The Phlebotomist supports lab operations. The phlebotomist collects specimens, conducts waived point-of-care testing, and does lab assistance and administrative duties. Receiving outpatients and entering orders appropriately are additional responsibilities. Assigns other obligations.

Qualifications:

• Properly record all tests and diagnoses using proper laboratory forms (see below). Produce labels for the forms and specimen containers, as well as lab requisition forms, to complete the lab (s).
• Perform specimen handling, control, and tracking duties, which may entail the handling of potentially infectious/carcinogenic substances. Inventory, track, and order supplies as required.
• Get blood samples from adults and children using established venipuncture and capillary techniques, as well as urine samples or other samples as ordered by the doctor.
• Assist with the compliance processes for infection control by keeping the environment clean and sterile at all times. This includes the daily cleaning of the laboratory and the emptying of any biohazard bags.
• Maintain the integrity of specimens by using authorized laboratory practices as you prepare, package, and deliver them to the proper lab.
• Blood is drawn from the patient. Perform complicated troubleshooting and schedule field service visits as directed by the department’s laboratory professional and pathology personnel in order to operate laboratory instruments autonomously.
• Carry out quality control and record it for each test that is performed in the appropriate log If the findings of the test are not within permissible limits, you must tell the laboratory management or medical technologist.
• Examine each request for a lab test to figure out how many and what kind of containers are needed for easy distribution to the right lab sections and reference labs.
• Customer service, especially the scheduling of complicated communications, should be done politely and quickly, according to the standards and procedures of the department.
• This includes teaching technical employees about complex computer capabilities and navigating all of the local computer system’s menu routes.

Skills:

• To accomplish obligations, you must grasp lab materials, solutions, and media. Microsoft Excel and electronic medical records are required for data input (EMRs).
• Minimum of a high school diploma. Natural Sciences or Allied Health or current participation in a Medical Laboratory Science program is recommended, although lab experience is not required. Helpful are knowledge of medical terms and keyboarding abilities.
• Lift and carry 30 pounds, sit for long hours, move between office buildings. Work with various patients, significant others, and families.
• Ability to do venipuncture in an efficient and successful manner Ability to communicate cooperatively with patients and staff Task prioritization and time management abilities.
• Knowledge and experience doing phlebotomy and skin punctures, as obtained via a minimum of six (6) months experience, preferred; ASCP Certification. A valid driver’s license and the ability to fulfill insurance company standards are required.
