Job Description

The Patient Care Associate manages and provides care to the patient and his/her family and directs and supervises nursing care by other team members. Patient Care Associates analyze, plan, administer, coordinate, delegate, and evaluate nursing care according to the professional practice model.

Qualifications:

  • Under the direction of a registered nurse, does a variety of basic patient care tasks. Notifies the registered nurse of any changes in the patient’s physical or mental health. Helps the nursing staff deal with different emergency situations with patients.
  • Do the nursing assessment on each patient by asking them about their visit and measuring their weight, vital signs, and/or other clinical measures that are appropriate.
  • Clinical tasks, such as drawing blood, running the centrifuge, collecting urine for drug screens, pregnancy tests, and alcohol tests, and giving injections, must be done safely and correctly as ordered by the provider.
  • Participating in workshops, educational programs, in-service meetings, and reading current literature all help to improve personal growth. Shares responsibility (with the institution) for keeping skills up to date.
  • Communicate with insurance companies and acquire preauthorization for drugs to ensure that patients have access to the right medications. Submitting appeals to insurance companies to overturn preauthorization rejections in circumstances when preauthorization is rejected.
  • Concern for patient comfort and privacy, as well as an interest in the patient’s success, are shown by this behavior. Patients and their loved ones are educated about treatments and processes within their capacities. Secrecy abounds.
  • General clerical duties as needed by the unit. These include answering the phone and call lights and greeting patients and visitors.
  • Dispose of needles, urine specimens, and collection cups, among other biohazardous items and devices, properly.
  • Perform administrative chores such as making phone calls or answering the telephone, scheduling patient appointments, obtaining supplies that are required for treatment, and tasks that further aid clinicians such as scribing in order to contribute to the smooth operation and effectiveness of the office.
  • As determined by the requirements of the unit, performs general clerical responsibilities. These duties may include, but are not limited to, welcoming patients and visitors, answering the telephone and call lights, and taking messages.

Skills:

  • Completion of a facility-based training program in the execution of electrocardiograms and basic life support operations, including CPR certification.
  • Basic life support OR cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as well as the capacity to communicate effectively in both oral and writing English (BLS OR CPR)
  • attainment of a passing grade in the phlebotomy training course required by the Department of Health, which must also be approved by the Laboratory Director and be suitable for the amount of work performed at the facility.
  • CPR or BLS certification in its most current version is essential, as well as previous experience working as a nurse in an outpatient setting specialized in general care, substance abuse or mental health.
  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program or enrollment in and completion of the first semester of Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) nursing school.
